Once the excitement of announcing your engagement is over and you have started planning your special day, settle down with your fiancé and write out your wedding guest list. Once this done, you should think about the theme of your wedding and then decide on the style and type of invitation and wording you would like.
If you are having a small family wedding in an intimate venue say for a party of 20, then you can be elaborate in style, wording, colour and texture of paper or card. Whether it is a fluted gilt-edged classical card with matching separate reply card, or a carrier pigeon with a box containing a feathered invitation you should try to make it something really special. For a large wedding on a grand scale, you could go into a whole creative mood and choose a foiled heart in deep red, purple pink, gold or silver or whatever colour catches the strings of your heart.
There are absolutely masses of options to go for, apart from the usual, which are normally available, to select from a portfolio at one of the top wedding stationers. Another option is to make your own wedding stationary. This could be fun to do with your bridesmaids and friends or fiancé at work, if you do not have time in the day. There are shops that have huge selection of different papers in fun colours, textures, weights, patterns, sheens and re-cycled or handmade papers. They have accessories of envelopes, decorations like quills, feathers, raffia, stars and spangles to dangle from the invitation envelope.
Once you have selected your paper and decoration you should have a trial run and create around your idea and add on or delete, so you end up with absolutely the right idea and add on or delete, so that you end up with absolutely the right idea. After completing and you are satisfied with the satisfied with the style and look of your invitation then you should order your paper, decorations, adhesives in bulk and probably save quite a lot. Using your computer for styling the wording with a different type of font is easy, you can experiment all night until it comes right and print on the paper you have chosen; if it is not too thick. For a really professional touch take it to PostNet to get them to guillotine the edges. They can also post in bulk for you.
The wording can be classic as follows:-
Mr & Mrs. Reg Mc Kenzie would like to invite you to the wedding of their daughter Kim to Barry O’Neil the only son of Mrs. Patrick O’Neil At the Church of Our Lady, Kloof Street, Cape Town On The 28th February 2005 4p.m
And Afterwards at a reception to be held at The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay, Cape Town.
If the couple’s parent’s are divorced as an alternate modernistic and simplistic invitation the wording could be:-
Kim & Barry Would like you to share their joy In a celebration of their joining together in matrimony at ceremony, reception, date, time, dress code RSVP
A more modern approach would be:-
Kim & Barry
Would like to share their love for each other At A great occasion which they will treasure forever. Join them for their wedding in a special ceremony on the 14 February 2005 And afterwards at their dinner/dance, rock’n roll or country reception lunch party or wedding breakfast at…………
If you want to make your invitation informal and modernistic then it is O.K. to address your guests by their first names, i.e. Susan Jackson and partner, rather Miss Susan Jackson and partner, rather than Miss Susan Jackson.
- Each invitation should include the name of the guest (guests) to whom you are sending
- The name(s) from whom you are sent
- Names of bridal couple
- Date and time of the big day
- Ceremony venue (if different fro the reception venue) reception venue and time
- Dress code
- RSVP details
- Map with directions to the venue if necessary It is a good idea to have a self addressed and stamped reply card printed and enclosed with the invitation, as well as a loose-leaf gift registry list.
Many marriages today are inter-cultural; therefore it is a good idea to have a food preference, i.e. vegetarian, halaal, kosher. Think about postage and how to get your invitations posted or hand delivered well in advance. Sending them via PostNet on Swiftmail, is more or less guaranteed delivery, otherwise investigate the feasibility and costs of hand delivery.
INTERNET INVITATIONS are an amazing option for fast efficient communication. Why not design your own wedding invitation together and then find a web designer to finish it professionally to mail to your friends near and far. It is the most ideal and effective way of communicating your good news with an automatic and fast response system. If you want your parents and closest relations to have the real thing in their hands, you can ask your designer to print them out on special paper and then have them hand delivered.
Add on stationary can be designed and printed either by yourself or by a professional wedding stationer, which should be the ceremony order of service sheets, table place cards, menu cards and a table seating plan along with thank you cards.
